As part of the Master in Visual Communication and Art Direction, I developed this project under the guidance of professor Giacomo Boffo. The brief required the redesign of the visual identity of MACRO, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome. Located in the Roman neighbourhood of Salario-Nomentano, MACRO occupies part of the former Birra Peroni Brewery, an industrial complex designed by architect Gustavo Giovannoni in 1912. Originally used for stables and storage, the site today stands as a rare example of industrial archaeology within the city, embodying a unique blend of historical memory and contemporary cultural experimentation. The design concept was built around a dynamic interpretation of the museum’s initial letter, M. This “macro” M was conceived as a variable sign system, flexible, adaptive, and scalable across different formats and items. From print materials to digital applications, the identity was designed to accommodate the diverse needs of a contemporary museum, ensuring consistency while leaving room for continuous evolution and reinterpretation.
